Casa de Cultura
The House of Culture
Casa de Cultura is a performing arts venue and community center offering classes, workshops, shows, and festivals of Afro Brazilian Culture. Casa De Cultura is the nickname of the building at 1901 San Pablo Avenue, purchased by CAF in 2019. Our 47 years in Berkeley has made it clear that to support our diverse community CAF needs to hold accessible space. CAF offers deeply subsidized fees to organizations, teachers, healers, and others using the building. Without subsidized fees our cultural ambassadors couldn’t afford to continue serving the communities they have spent the last half century building. The “Casa de Cultura” is a “third space,” a space of belonging for many.
A "third space" is a public place, like a coffee shop or park, that's distinct from home and work, where people can gather, relax, and connect with others. These spaces facilitate informal social interaction, community building, and a sense of belonging, acting as a bridge between home and the workplace. The prevalence of third places has been declining in recent years due to various factors, including the rise of home working and the increasing cost of living.
Casa de Cultura seeks to be a third space
